'코스모스 COSMOS'

우리는 아주 거대한 질서 속에서 존재한다.

관측되고 인식되는 우주의 질서와 조화, 그리고 그 아름다움은 단순 천체의 배열을 넘어 모든 시공간의 에너지와 생명, 물질, 나아가 형이상학적 영역까지 아우르는 하나의 ‘코스모스’를 이룬다. 백억 년 동안 팽창해 온 거대한 공간 속에서 나의 창작물과 삶은 두말할 것 없이 한 톨의 모래알처럼 미미한 존재일 것이다.

그러나 그 작은 코스모스 역시 스스로의 궤도를 따라 움직인다. 때로는 빛의 속도처럼 강렬하게, 때로는 희미한 날숨처럼 조용하게 흔적을 남긴다. 어떤 여정은 밀도 높은 은하처럼 선명한 빛무리를 만들고, 어떤 시도는 칠흑의 텅 빈 공간을 하염없이 보는 것처럼 누군가에게 닿지 못한 울림으로 남을 수도 있다. 그렇지만 그 모든 과정은 결국 나만의 세계를 이루어가는 필연적인 궤적이다.

나의 결과물들은 서로 독립되어 존재하지 않았다. 중력이 파도를 만들고 별들을 연결하듯, 지난 작업들은 서로를 인식하며 끌어당기고 밀어내는 관계 속에서 새로운 형태를 만들어낸다. 지금의 작업은 이전 궤적의 연장이자, 또 다른 항해를 시작하는 출발점이다. 3차원의 우리는 우주의 무한함을 이해하지 못하며, 완전한 형태를 온전히 이해할 수 없다. 마찬가지로 나 역시 절대적인 완성이나 궁극의 이상을 목표로 하기보다는 끝없이 탐구하고 확장하는 흐름 자체를 결과물의 본질로 받아들일 것이다.

나의 세계가 광활한 코스모스의 아주 작은 흔적일지라도, 동시대를 살아가는 어느 누군가에게는 잠시 들러 안온한 위안을 받고 새로운 바람을 전할 수 있는 빛으로 관측되길 바란다. (작가노트)

작가소개

임종석 작가는 우리 전통 세선 세공의 현대적 재해석과 독창적 조형미를 인정받고 있다. 이 기법은 얇은 금속선(세선)을 꼬아 만드는 전통적 기술로 현재는 국내에서 거의 사용되지 않는 희귀한 기법이다.

강인하고도 섬세한 세공의 오브제 창조를 위해 끊임없이 도전하는 작가는 <시대에게 To Contemporaries> 작품으로 ‘2025 청주국제공예공모전의 에어로케이-파트너상’을, 고려아연의 대한민국 ‘올해의 금속공예가상(2024)’을 수상한 바 있다.

"COSMOS"

We exist within an immense order.

The order and harmony of the universe—observed and perceived—along with its beauty, extend far beyond the mere arrangement of celestial bodies. They form a single "cosmos" that encompasses the energy, life, and matter of all space and time, and even reaches into the metaphysical realm. Within this vast expanse that has been expanding for tens of billions of years, my creations and my life are, without question, as minuscule as a single grain of sand.

And yet, even that small cosmos moves along its own orbit. At times it leaves its trace as intensely as the speed of light; at other times, as quietly as a faint breath. Some journeys form a luminous halo as dense as a galaxy, while other attempts may remain as echoes that never reach anyone—like staring endlessly into the pitch-black emptiness of space. Still, all of these processes are, in the end, the inevitable trajectory that shapes a world of my own.

My works have never existed independently of one another. Just as gravity creates waves and connects stars, my past works recognize one another, drawing together and pushing apart, and in that relationship they give rise to new forms. The work of today is an extension of a past trajectory, and at the same time the starting point of another voyage. We, as three-dimensional beings, cannot comprehend the infinity of the universe, nor can we fully grasp any complete, perfect form. In the same way, rather than aiming for absolute completion or an ultimate ideal, I choose to embrace the very flow of endless exploration and expansion as the essence of my work.

Even if my world is only the faintest trace within the vast cosmos, I hope it may be observed as a light—one that someone living in this same era might pause beside, drawing quiet comfort and a breath of something new.

About the Artist

Artist Lim Jong-seok is recognized for his contemporary reinterpretation of traditional fine wire metalwork (seseon) and his distinctive formative aesthetic. This technique—twisting extremely thin metal wires—is a traditional craft rarely practiced in Korea today.

Constantly challenging himself to create objects that embody both strength and delicacy, the artist received the Aero K Partner Award at the 2025 Cheongju International Craft Competition for his work "To Contemporaries," and was honored with Korea Zinc's 2024 Metal Craftsperson of the Year Award.
