남태평양의 섬나라 피지를 누비며 큰 섬 2개와 작은 섬 2개를 촬영하였다. 아름다운 나무들을 보았고, 장엄한 풍광을 보았고, 밝고 순박한 사람들을 보았다. 그렇게 한 달 보름이라는 시간이 빠르게 지나갔다.
촬영 전 부러진 발뼈가 걸을 때마다 고통을 통해 매 순간 현실을 일깨웠고, 라우토카의 분리수거하지 않은 쓰레기 언덕이 20여 일 동안 화재로 매연을 뿜었지만, 피지에 사는 동안 여기가 낙원이라는 생각은 변하지 않았다.
산이 하늘과, 섬이 바다와, 사람이 자연과 조화를 이루며 살고 있는 그곳은 낙원이 분명해 보였다. 바다 생태계의 한 축을 이루며 막대한 탄소 저장을 통해 기후 위기와 쓰나미의 피해까지 막아 주는 맹그로브 숲이 영원하기를 바라는 것처럼, 이 낙원이 오랜 시간 사라지지 않기를 바란다.
환승 시간 포함, 피지에서 출발해 36시간 만에 도착한 인천공항, 비행기가 착륙하기 위해 고도를 낮추는 동안 창밖에 잠시 무지개가 보였다. 곧 태풍 카눈의 짙은 구름 속에 비행기는 묻혀버렸지만, 다시 조금만 올라가면 무지개를 만든 햇살이 있다는 것을 나는 안다.
마치 눈에 보이지 않지만, 저마다 상상하는 각자의 낙원이 어딘가 분명히 존재하는 것처럼 그렇게.

I traveled around Fiji, an island country in the South Pacific, and photographed two large islands and two small islands. I saw beautiful trees, majestic scenery, and bright and simple people. A month and a half passed quickly like that.

The place where the mountains lived in harmony with the sky, the islands with the sea, and people living in harmony with nature clearly seemed like paradise. Just as we hope that the mangrove forest, which forms an axis of the marine ecosystem and prevents climate crisis and tsunami damage through massive carbon storage, will last forever, we hope that this paradise will not disappear for a long time.
Including transit time, I arrived at Incheon Airport 36 hours after departing from Fiji. A rainbow briefly appeared outside the window as the plane lowered its altitude to land. The plane was soon buried in the thick clouds of Typhoon Kanun, but I know that just a little bit higher there would be sunlight that created a rainbow. Even though it is invisible to the eye, it is as if the paradise each person imagines clearly exists somewhere.
